Upcoming hiatus, recess planning, and guest posts wanted

Regular readers may have noticed posting has been lighter than usual here lately. I’ve been having a hard time writing the past couple of weeks, partly because I’ve been incredibly busy with other stuff, and also partly because all the news going on with the City budget and the State budget is just so ridiculously depressing that every time I sit down to write I end up just staring at the screen and my half written posts all despondent until I just can’t take it anymore and turn off the computer and go pour myself some bourbon.

Anyway, I’ve decided I need a break. I need some time to catch up on other parts of my life, and would love a chance to work on some longer-term projects without the pressure of a daily deadline. I will be taking next week, August 3-7, off from blogging. I would love to take the following week, August 10-14 off as well. That’s where you guys come in.

I hate the idea of abandoning you all with nothing to read. And of course, with over 12,000 comments on the site, I know you all have plenty to say. So I’m soliciting guest posts from my readers for while I’m on break. The ground rules are simple: it has to be about Oakland, should be between 500 and 2,000 words, and has to be true. I’m happy to put up guest posts that I don’t agree with, but I won’t put up anything that is flat out wrong. If you want to write something, but are having trouble finding specific numbers to reference or something like that, feel free to e-mail me and I’ll try to help you out. (I won’t have e-mail access for the next couple of days, though.) If you’re interested in writing a guest post, or you have something written you’d like to submit, just write to me at v at vsmoothe dot com or fill out this contact form.

Also, the City Council is now on recess until September, which I, for one, could not possibly be happier about. This gives me a little break from writing about whatever is going on like, right now, which is really nice. I have some things I’ve been working on that I’ll be writing about, but I’m also curious about what you guys would like to see. Do you have questions about how some aspect of the City works? Is there a subject that you’re interested in, but find it hard to catch up with everything that’s already gone on? If there’s something you’d like me to write about, leave your suggestion in the comments. I can’t promise I’ll get to everything people ask about, but I will do my best.

Poor V! You do such a community service here, and you worry about taking some time? For what my opinions worth, take your time guilt free! I can promise you at least one appreciative reader will be here waiting for your return (and I know I’m not the only one).

Thank you! Oakland (and really every community) needs such dedicated reporting.

(But since I do spend inordinate amounts of time checking this website, here’s hoping some guest posters do show up in numbers… :) ).

Don’t feel sorry for me, Jim. I didn’t mean to sound whiny! I love writing this blog, even if it does get to be exhausting from time to time.

I’ll be taking next week off whether people send in guest posts or not, but I really would like to be able to fill up the space while I’m gone.

The budget really has been incredibly depressing. My reaction to blogging about it has been the same as yours, just without the bourbon part. :-)

I believe that most or all of us find the source of your seemingly endless energy for blogging to be mysterious. We’ll look forward to guest posts, should those materialize, but most importantly, enjoy your well-deserved vacation!

    Here’s a guest post title:

“Just Because Alan Michaan has a great big sign does not mean anybody should listen to him”

    Whadaya think?

Did you need any help with guest bourbon drinking? I can do 500-2000 sips, easy.

(BTW, once crimespotting has data through 7/31, i’m doing another fullblown crime stats. Chatter is definitely way up, but that doesn’t always mean crime is way up. That’s probably ~8/8ish for completion. It’s typically 5 powerpoint pages, but i’ll send you a condensed version once i’m done, up to you whether you want to post.)

Maybe you should talk to your boss about easing up on those brutal daily deadlines, V. ;)

I look forward to any guest posts, and I especially look forward to your return. Thanks again for all the hard work you put into ABO — you can count me among those who are astonished by the quantity and quality of your output, especially considering how much research (not to mention sitting through long meetings) you must do.

Are those 12,000 unique comments or are they 11,000 from Max and the rest from everyone else?

I look forward to Max’s guest post.

I’m back from vacation. Expect something boring about zoning later on this week that may or may not contain bitchy comments about people’s ability to glue-stick paper cut-out houses to a big map. Get excited people. Get. Excited.

    Dear V,

You do us a great service, the vacuum leadership is overwhelming but in Oakland people care and are willing to fix things. You have greatly improved Oakland and lack of politic vision and leadership does not lesses what you have done.

A talented young film maker has turned his camera on Oakland, this is a great site of Oaklanders talking at the waiting room at Highland Hospital.
